Can You Still Find Jadeite Dishes at Thrift Stores and Garage Sales?

The days of finding thrift store shelves regularly stocked with cheaply priced Jadeite are pretty much history. At least that’s the case in our area. And garage sales?  Forget them.  There still seems to be plenty of Pyrex around, but Jadeite in the wild is exceptionally scarce.

In fact, I’ve never found any Jadeite at a garage sale, and only the odd scratched plate or well worn mug at thrift stores.  Jadeite is becoming increasingly less affordable to collect, especially the rare or popular pieces.

Search Facebook Marketplace in Your Area

Online marketplaces have the most regular and reliable source of inventory, so that’s where I find most of my stock.  Personally, I’ve had the best luck with Facebook Marketplace when searching for Jadeite.  There are still relative bargains to be had there, although I use that term loosely.

I’ve yet to score any rare pieces, or rock bottom prices, but because there are no shipping costs, import fees or taxes, I’ve always been able to buy at least below market value.

Where to Find Jadeite Reproductions

There are now some nice reproductions available, and companies like Amazon, Walmart, and Bed, Bath & Beyond all sell newly manufactured Jadeite.  Some of the modern pieces are reproductions of original vintage designs, and others are fantasy items.

What are Jadeite Fantasy Pieces?

With Jadeite reproductions there are usually minor structural differences from the original designs, but overall, they resemble their vintage counterparts.

Fantasy pieces, on the other hand, were never produced by the original manufacturer, but are intended to look as though they might have been a vintage product.

This Cracker Barrel Jadeite Santa Cookie Jar is an example of a fantasy piece. It was never manufactured by any of the main Jadeite producing companies, such as Anchor Hocking (Fire-King), Mckee, or Jeannette.

Fire-King 2000 Reproductions

Fire-King Jadeite batter bowls were produced by Anchor Hocking from the 1950s and into the 60s, but reproductions were made by the company in the year 2000.

As you can from the photo, it is clearly marked 2000 and is therefore not early vintage.

Collect Them All!

At Fire-King Grill, we prefer vintage over reproduction or fantasy pieces, but we do own some of them.  We have several Jadeite cake stands and some of the year 2000 pans and casserole dishes.  At some point, the Cracker Barrel Santa cookie jar is going to have to make its way into our inventory, too.
